PVPP CAS: 9003-39-8

Cross-linked polyvinylpyrrolidone (Crospovidone/PVPP, CAS: 9003-39-8) is a water-insoluble cross-linked N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone homopolymer with the molecular formula (C6H9NO)n, listed in the Chinese, U.S., and European Pharmacopoeias. This product is a white to off-white powder; its aqueous suspension has a pH of 5.0–8.0, a density of 1.22 g/cm³, and a water absorption rate of nearly 60%. It is insoluble in water and conventional organic solvents; The nitrogen content of the anhydrous form is controlled between 11.0% and 12.8%; the Chinese Pharmacopoeia standard was officially published in July 2019. In the pharmaceutical sector, it is primarily used as a tablet disintegrant, with a typical addition rate of 1%–2%; it can also serve as a dry binder (20–80 mg per tablet) to enhance drug dissolution. In Europe, the United States, and the United Kingdom, it is approved for use in oral, topical, and even injectable formulations. In the food industry, it can chelate polyphenols and adsorb proteins and enzymes. China introduced safety standards for this food additive in 2014, strictly controlling water-soluble impurities and free monomers.
