Applications
Cross-linked polyvinylpyrrolidone is a water-insoluble tablet disintegrant that rapidly exhibits high capillary activity and excellent hydration capacity, with virtually no tendency to gel; Studies have shown that the particle size of cross-linked polyvinylpyrrolidone strongly influences the disintegration of antipyretic and analgesic tablets; larger cross-linked polyvinylpyrrolidone particles promote faster disintegration than smaller ones. Cross-linked polyvinylpyrrolidone is an exceptionally effective disintegrant; typically, a dosage of 1–21 TP3T in tablets is sufficient to achieve the disintegration performance of other commonly used standard disintegrants, earning it the designation of a “super disintegrant.”
Cross-linked polyvinylpyrrolidone can also be used as a dry binder, filler, and excipient in tablets, capsules, and granules. When used in finer particle sizes, it can reduce surface mottling in compressed tablets and improve tablet uniformity. The typical dosage is 20–80 mg per tablet.
Cross-linked polyvinylpyrrolidone can also be used as a dissolution enhancer; when combined with co-evaporation technology, it can increase the solubility of poorly soluble drugs: First, the drug is adsorbed onto cross-linked polyvinylpyrrolidone using an appropriate solvent, and then the solvent is evaporated. This technique results in a faster dissolution rate.
This product is also widely used in the food industry as a filtration aid in the production of alcohol and vinegar, to remove enzymes and proteins.
Cross-linked polyvinylpyrrolidone and polyphenols can form stable complexes that can be used to purify water-soluble or alcohol-based herbal extracts and tinctures, thereby improving the stability of herbal medicines.
